Artist Bio

Who be CURSED? The answer depends on who you ask. (Producer / MC) Braz Knuckz describes CURSED’s sound as “good music, fresh new hip-hop that’s original”. “Anyone can rap,” say’s CURSED, “but not everyone can make music and that's where I come in – fresh and original, freedom of the message” For CURSED, aka “Joseph Benac” music is freedom of emotion and freedom of communication, it helps him feel free to feel and say what he wants in order to get his message out. CURSED opens one up to purity of feeling as well as uncompromising ideas, simply seeing music as an integral element of existence but he also notes its importance of communication as well as entertainment. The Artist at work “CURSED” born in Ottawa but raised by his single mother in Gatineau, is the youngest in a family of five children. His background roots extend from French Canadian and African (Tanzania). As a youngster, he was often told that the name his mother had chosen for him had a higher purpose, while his father's family called him “selekwa mtebe”, which means “treasured child”. Growing up “CURSED” aka Joseph always had a thing for music, especially Hip-Hop. As a youngster he would lock myself in his room and sing in front of the mirror and imagine he was really kickin’ it on stage. CURSED grew up listening to his role models day in and day out, from MLK, Malcom X, soul to r&b, hip-hop to reggae and even rock all play a part in his artistic style of music. His influences stemmed from Ray Charles, James Brown, M.J, Run DMC, Jodeci, R Kelly, Tupac and Biggy. During his high school years is when it all clicked, at age 12 he was hooked! “Everyday I was out there rappin’ for fun, cash and battles, anyplace, time or reason. I was down and lovin’ every moment.” For CURSED it was his way of not only to be heard but also to tell his story. Immediately he knew he wanted to be a part of the Canadian hip- hop history for years to come. Now 22, he knows his generation and urban music is stronger and closer to it then ever before. CURSED is no beginner when it comes to movin’ the crowd. From performing at small venues in clubs and block parties to festivals like “Festival de montgolfières de Gatineau”,” Super X, “Hip Hop 4ever”, and a few freestyle battles; has only helped this urban artist grow. During his climb, he joined a local band named “Ladynastie” that featured other artist like (soke, grimaud, eva avila, righteous and p noize) “I had some of the greatest experience as a young MC on the come up, we did 2 mix-tapes ,”les 40 voleurs” and “swamp music”, did many shows in and around Quebec and Ontario and made a lot of friends in the French and Latin scene while appearing on radio interviews at 89.1 and tag radio.” Like Always things change and CURSED found himself looking to do more; so he left the group to start his own thing with his life time friends Cza and Jinx. “Cza , Jinx and I were raised on the same block, seen and did pretty much everything together, had a unusual life for regular adolescents, we managed to start our own group repin’ our blocks name…’School Street’.” As School Street, they dropped two mix-tapes together and decided to push it until they found the perfect opportunity to get a shot for a debut album. As a group or solo act anything would do as long as they stuck together. With the first mix-tape out ‘School Street’ was already known around Montreal, Ottawa and outaouais wide in the underground scene. CURSED notes, “I did a song in 2007 with “yvon kreve” aka von von which as far as I know is the biggest rap artist in the French Canadian scene, and Cza made a song with bizzard from D-12 this year /09 to be released on his up coming album Quebec wide.” So now you ask, what’s next for this Artist? Currently CURSED is busy promoting his first solo mix-tape “The Jump Off” and has announced his signing to Ravish Entertainment for his debut solo project in the works with Producer / MC “Braz Knuckz”. This Urban hip-hop artist has paid his dues and intends to spread out his message to the kids of this generation to make them understand that they are the world to come and that they can be better then ever, in life, love and music.
